About

The catalogue raisonné project began in 2011 to document the works of the American artist Robert Watson Munford (1925-1991). Munford, a noted painter, printmaker, and educator, co-founded the Spanish art group Grupo Ibiza 59. Critics have compared his art of the 1950s and 1960s to the Pop precursor works of Larry Rivers, R.J. Kitaj, and Peter Saul.

Planned is a two-volume scholarly catalogue. Portions of the catalogue will be made available through this website. This project has been made possible through the support of the Estate of Robert W. Munford.

Tokyo Monochrome | Photographic Works by Kawara Chan, October 8 - December 9, 2023

Exhibit Catalogue Now Available at Blurb.

Atelier Laforest will be hosting the exhibit Tokyo Monochorme: Photographic Works by Kawara Chan October 8 through December 9, 2023. Kawara Chan is a Tokyo-based photographer and a founding member of the celebrated street photography collective VoidTokyo. The exhibition will be the artist’s first North American solo exhibition.

The exhibition features a selection of black and white photographs selected and curated by Rodney Obien, Associate Professor and Head of Special Collections at Keene State College.

“Tokyo is a massive city of 38 million people,” says Obien. “Kawara Chan goes out every day with her camera and tries to capture brief fleeting moment of a city that’s in perpetual motion, day and night. Her work is compelling.”

Kawara Chan was among the other members of VoidTokyo that were showcased at exhibition at the Hiko Hiko Gallery in Ginza Tokyo. The exhibition was featured in an article in the Japan Times.

“There are so many people in my area,” writes Kawara Chan. “I spend more time watching them than taking photos. Sometimes, I feel caught in a whirlpool of humanity.”

“Tokyo comes alive in Kawara Chan’s photography,” says Obien. “Her images always bring me back to my first visit to Japan—the overwhelming excitement, the bright lights, the rush of the most populous city in the world.”

“I want viewers to connect with my work,” Kawara Chan continues. “I want them to connect in their memories and feel the strength and complexity of the human energy thriving in Tokyo—a city that never ceases to interest me.”

Tokyo Monochrome runs through December 9, 2023. An opening reception is scheduled for October 8th. The Atelier Laforest is the gallery in Dennysville, Maine for the Archives of Robert Watson Munford, the noted artist and co-founder of the Spanish artist collective Grupo Ibiza 59.
